Self-described “Satanic Doom Duo”, Tumanduumband hail from the blackened heart of heavy metal (i.e., the West Midlands) and have been terrorising listeners since 2018. The band’s first few releases found them pounding their deliciously dark sound into shape whilst their debut album (2023’s Throne Of Grief) saw them evolve into hit priests of the black arts and evoked all sorts of evil spirits. Sophomore effort Hail Satan, Triumph Awaits finds Tumanduumband spreading their wings and stretching things out to impossible lengths, delivering an album that’s as dark as it is delightful and if a vinyl version ever drops, it’ll be so heavy you won’t be able to lift it off the turntable.
Although Hail Satan, Triumph Awaits comprises of just three tracks, it still has a near 40-minute running time and, as you’d imagine, things tend to veer towards the epic. With the riffs stretched to the point of breaking (think Tony Iommi on downers) and the drums equally downbeat, the sound created crawls along like a wounded Golem, it’s supremely Satanic and it feels a tad dangerous playing opening track ‘Consulting The Haruspex’, as if by doing so you’ll summon the Goat Of Mendes. Tumanduumband largely dispense with vocals and in their place are some choice samples that only add to the sense of unease. In tandem, both music and samples conspire to give the album a 1970’s aesthetic; it brings to mind Black Sabbath and Zior, whilst conjuring images of Scars Of Dracula and Psychomania (which also makes it infinitely cool).
The album’s pièce de résistance is undoubtedly the title track, an eighteen-and-a-half minute hulking monolith that drags the listener down to delirious depths as if an anchor tied to a drowning man. Akin to standing beside a huge brutalist structure it makes the listener feel quite small and insignificant in its shadow. Drawing a clear lineage back to Sabbath through Godflesh and Swans, Tumanduumband deal in a visceral brand of doom metal, the pain and trauma of modern living condensed into its purest form, distilled into a brew that’s 100% proof and highly flammable.
This is an album that finds Tumanduumband moving forwards and opens countless possibilities for future mayhem. Where they go next is anybody’s guess, but for now embrace the darkness.
